Darren Clark

Born at Phillip Creek Station, Peggy Napangardi Jones grew up in the bush. Her mother was a Warlpiri woman, and her grandmother from Alekarenge, her Warumungu father gave Peggy her inherited dreamtime stories and their laws. They are her inspiration to paint. The artist has fond memories of travelling through the harsh rocky lands with her family. Peggy was introduced to acrylic painting on canvas in 1996 after joining the Julalikari Women's Art and Craft program situated at the old Pink Palace in Tennant Creek. This enthusiastic group of local women were also encouraged and instructed on how to use other mediums including lion-cuts, etchings, silkscreen, painting and pottery. Peggy adapted to all mediums, bush birds and animals seem to take on personalities immediately and her bush tucker designs have such extraordinary placement on the canvas that defines the skill of an untrained technician. Peggy Napangardi Jones has stated that she doesn't like to have story of each painting written down because she already knows she is the right one to do these designs. She said "I do painting anyway". I'm right from bush banana and bush orange I do blackberries from my mother and my uncles and willy wagtails, white cockies, kangaroos, bush potato, use any way I can do them too. If someone buys it they can just look at the painting, no story written down. Peggy Napangardi Jones paintings are included in the National Gallery of Victoria's hang of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art in Melbourne's Ian Potter Centre; NGV Australia at Federation Square which opened on the 26th October 2002.Clark, Darren.Date:2012-0
