The formation of Upper Iowa University began in 1855, two years before it opened its doors for the first classes. During that time of formation, the institution was known as the Fayette Seminary of the Upper Iowa Conference of the Methodist Church. We were a strict Methodist University until 1928 when the church decided to reduce the number of universities it sponsored. It was mandatory for all students to attend chapel during those years.
