In 1999 Ixer published a critical article ‘There is no Such Thing as Reflection’ (1999),which attempted to halt the unquestioning acceptance of the concept of reflection from academics and professionals. Social work students are required to demonstrate their ability to reflect in practice yet reflection is ill defined therefore, problematic to assess. Ixer challenged the academic community to research this area more extensively so we can know more about the very thing we are assessing in students; in essence, ensure that our assessment is ethical. The article takes stock on what we have learnt about reflection over the past ten years and how such understanding is informing more ethical assessment of students
