This study employed a convenient sample of 165 substantiated cases of physical child abuse reported to the Child Care Board (Child Welfare Agency) Barbados, between the years 1987-1996. The research examined child, family, community, and cultural characteristics, to determine their relationship to the severity of physical child abuse in Barbadian families. Components of a social interactional model of child abuse were used to explain the concept under study, and research variables were operationalized by taking into consideration the cultural milieu.
