My essay focuses on La Llorona, or the "The Wailing Lady", a prominent figure in Mexican folklore. The legend is central to Mexican identity and has historical and cultural significance. It also lends to itself to a feminist perspective due to the stereotypical, yet conflicting, portrayal of this multi-faceted female character which continues to reinforce the strong gender norms in Mexican culture. The legend of La Llorona is a particularly interesting topic because she has become a feminist figure and aided modern Mexican women in the reclamation of both their femininity and heritage
