As a student in the four-year Registered Nurse-Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-BSN) program, you are immersed in an education beyond the vital scientific facts and nursing skills. Throughout the undergraduate studies, one is challenged to rise to the skills of thorough assessments, critical thinking, and evaluations. Not only are you prepared for the clinical setting, you are given the tools to go above and beyond with your career. Your time and efforts as a nursing student creates a pathway to success and leadership. A major goal in nursing is to practice cultural competence and provide holistic care to those around you. It is also a time to allow your creativity and dedication to come forward. This portfolio illustrates the growth and perseverance throughout the RN-BSN curriculum. These hand-picked examples showcase taking a deeper look within you. It was a time of self-reflection and discovering what is important to you and what you wish to stand for and support in life. One of the major principles we must honor as a nurse is advocacy. In your journey, you have the ability, power, and responsibility to others who are less fortunate and need their voices to be heard. This portfolio compiles the following works completed by Humna Elahi. 1. Service Learning Health in Communities- Power, Privilege, and Health- This essay addresses the dependent relationship between power, privilege, and health. It articulates and defines disparities, such as poverty and racism and their direct effects on health outcomes for specific populations. 2. Psychology & Nature- Social Justice Workshop Reflection- This piece is for a community engaged project written after attending a Sexual Violence workshop. The reflection represents hearing and the sharing of first-hand, personal experiences from victims of sexual assault and their advice on how one can be an ally. 3. Vulnerable Populations Symposium- “The Face of the Person Who is Homeless”- Here is a self-reflection written for an Ethics in Nursing Practice course. It highlights the struggles and barriers homeless individuals face in terms of access to healthcare and receiving respect from society. 4. Global & Cultural Perspectives- Terrorism Has No Religion- This serves as a stance and informative essay defining terrorism and exploring the religion of Islam, in hopes to clear the bias and name for innocent Muslims worldwide. Simple awareness and research can lead to a more progressive and peaceful co-existence. 5. Position Paper- Getting Over the Medication Notion- This piece presents research evidence and the argument for the need of better care for Veterans. It focuses on addressing, preventing, and transforming the issue of overmedicating those who have served. In this debate, a push for alternative approaches and therapies is offered in hopes to ensure safer, effective healthcare. 6. Healthcare Brochure- Decoding a Code Status- This piece breaks down what a code status is, common misconceptions held, and what each option entails. It serves as a starting point in building a foundation of knowledge and introducing the discussion of one’s values and wishes with their healthcare provider. 7. Professional Blog- Student Nurse Internship- This illustrates the wonderful journey of working full-time as a student nurse intern.
