SARS-CoV-2: la nueva pandemia

A new type of human coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2 causing COVID-19 disease, which manifests itself as a respiratory tract infection, has been the cause of a worldwide alarm state. SARS-CoV-2 is an RNA virus belonging to the Coronaviridae family, as well as the previous acute respiratory syndrome caused by coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and the respiratory syndrome of the Middle East (MERS-CoV). The source of the virus is not known with certainty, but it is associated with wild animals such as bats and intermediary reservoirs such as pangolin, snakes, and mink. The main contagion occurs through respiratory droplets and contact routes with people who have respiratory symptoms. The people most susceptible to presenting the most serious manifestations of the disease are those with comorbidities such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases and chronic respiratory diseases. Therapeutic management focuses on supportive measures and some drugs have undergone clinical trials to observe efficacy against SARS-CoV-2.Un nuevo tipo de coronavirus humano llamado SARS-CoV-2 causante de la enfermedad COVID-19 la cual se manifiesta como una infección del tracto respiratorio ha sido el motivo de un estado de alarma a nivel mundial. El SARS-CoV-2 es un virus ARN perteneciente a la familia Coronaviridae al igual que el anterior síndrome respiratorio agudo causado por coronavirus (SARS-CoV) y el síndrome respiratorio del Medio Este (MERS-CoV). No se conoce con certeza la fuente del virus, pero se relaciona con animales salvajes como el murciélago y reservorios intermediarios como el pangolín, serpientes y visones. El contagio principal se presenta por medio de gotitas respiratorias y vías de contacto con personas que tienen síntomas respiratorios. Las personas más susceptibles a presentar las manifestaciones más graves de la enfermedad son aquellas con comorbilidades como diabetes, hipertensión arterial, enfermedades cardiovasculares y enfermedades respiratorias crónicas. El manejo terapéutico se enfoca en medidas de soporte y algunos fármacos se han sometido a ensayos clínicos para observar eficacia contra el SARS-CoV-2
