Digital backward propagation (DBP) as a method to compensate signal distortions caused by group velocity dispersion and Kerr nonlinearity attracts much attention. As an inverted propagation simulation of the received signal is the key element of DBP, the main challenges is to reduce the computational effort. We review methods developed so far. © 2012 Optical Society of America
