Manufacturers are failing to maximise the benefits from their own sustainability ambitions. Their decision-making methods and tools have not evolved to allow the non-financial dimensions of sustainability to be accounted for. Non-financial information is not systematically used in decision making as manufacturers do not yet know how to value qualitative benefits, opportunities and challenges. This paper reviews current challenges and the literature on decision-making for sustainability in manufacturing. The paper presents the need for a decision-making framework for sustainability and a research agenda for developing such a framework and delivering a supporting tool. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2014
