This paper considers recent research on statistical energy analysis and related topics. Following a brief introduction to SEA, the extent of the literature on the subject is explored and it is found that around 140 journal papers making direct reference to SEA in the title have appeared over the past 38 years. Relevant papers that have appeared over the last ten years are listed, and various research themes are identified. A detailed description of a recently developed hybrid finite element-SEA is then given, and example results are shown to give some indication of current computational capabilities. Remaining challenges are then discussed
