An X-ray crystal structure reveals that the attempted deprotonation of cyclopropyl(triphenyl)phosphonium bromide with sodium amide affords a chiral N-phosphine substituted iminophosphorane via an unusual mechanism that has been investigated by multi-nuclear and variable temperature in situ NMR spectroscopy. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2000
