Caption: "Rioting exploded at Moon junior highschool shortly before noon Thursday, and enveloped the entire neighborhood in yelling, milling hysteria. The short-lived, end-of-shool outbreak was quelled in a bout 30 minutes by 15 police squadcars units, four motorcycle officers and fire hose-wielding firemen. No injuries were noted in the rain of bricks, ballbats, broken bottles, shoes, books and other missles thrown by shouting students. However, police sergent was struck in the chest with a clod of dirt. Principal William W. Johnson blamed the riot on hordes of Douglass and Webster students who already had been excused for summer vacation. He said the students came to Moon and "kidded" students who still had to pick up grade cards. Deputy sheriff A. D. Boyd, whose wife teaches at the school, said about 500 douglass and Webster students were on the school grounds. As the uprising began to spread, Johnson said he called police. The first two-man unit was thrown back immediately from the crowd-blocked door, and called for help. Suceeding waves of police cars arrived, anid repeated calls for reinforcements...Four fire department rescue squads and one fire truck were rushed to the rioting scene, and firemen began using hoses to break up the clots of ripters. Assistant Fire Chief Johnny Lynn, dodging a near-miss from a flying bottle, charged at one group empty-handed to break up the huddle...Crowds of curious spectators swarmed to the scene, and many joined in the jeering at officers in an apparent case of contagious hysteria.
