Laponia : the swedish state legitimation in the work of Johannes Schefferus

Orientador: Rui Luis RodriguesDissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências HumanasResumo: Com os desdobramentos da Guerra dos Trinta Anos e do Tratado de Vestfália, o reino da Suécia ¿ regido pela dinastia Vasa desde sua edificação em 1523 ¿ experimentou certo protagonismo político em um novo cenário europeu, assim como o florescimento das artes e letras. Com a reativação da Universidade de Uppsala e construção do Gustavianum, numerosos estudiosos foram convidados para integrar o novo corpo universitário. Dentre eles estava Johannes Schefferus que, incumbido pelo chanceler do reino, redigiu o primeiro relato exclusivo sobre os povos sámi, habitantes da Lapônia, território no extremo norte da Suécia própria, que passou a ser controlada de forma mais rígida e sistemática por agentes do emergente Estado sueco no mesmo período. A partir de relatos de clérigos e meirinhos que residiram na região e de objetos confiscados por esses executores, Schefferus buscou desmentir algumas crenças e conhecimentos sobre os sámis (conhecidos como lapps) construídos, principalmente, um século antes pelo arcebispo católico Olaus Magnus em sua Historia de gentibus septentrionalibus. Esta pesquisa buscou analisar como Schefferus participou, por meio da publicação de seu texto Lapponia, do processo de criação dos sámi como "outro", levando em consideração que esse processo se relacionava, de forma mais ampla, às aspirações de um potentado em ascensão em conectar seu passado virtuoso ao protagonismo vivido no presente para justificar seus avanços territoriais no Norte e sua posição políticaAbstract: In the aftermath of the Thirty Years¿ War, with the signing of the Westphalia Treaty, the Swedish kingdom, ruled by the Vasa dynasty since its election in 1523, became an important political center in seventeenth-century Europe. At the same time, arts and letters blossomed; when Uppsala University was reestablished and Gustavianum built, numerous scholars from around Europe were invited to integrate the new academic staff. One of them was Johannes Schefferus who, many years later, was delegated by Magnus Gabriel de la Gardie to write the first exclusive relation of the sámi people, inhabitants of Lapland: the Northernmost region of the Swedish territory that became systematically controlled by the new emergent Lutheran state. Originally from Strasbourg, Schefferus sought to disprove some beliefs and knowledge about the Sámi (known as Lapps) spread a century earlier by Olaus Magnus, an exiled Swedish archbishop, and his Historia de gentibus septentrionalibus. To do that, the humanist employed Sami material culture that was confiscated by the Swedish authorities and reports from clerics and bailiffs who resided in the Northern region.
