Morphometric aspects of subtropical basins of Northwest Argentina

The hydrological basin located on the eastern slopes of the mountains in the Northwest Argentina are characterized by a marked break in the slope piedmont Transition, orographic rainfall, flood events and few hydrometric records. Morphometric parameters used to define the interaction between geological and geomorphological characteristics, and surface physical patterns, characterizing quantitatively the possible response of the basin to a hydrologicalscenario. The objective of this study was to quantify the morphometric characteristics of the hydrological basins of the eastern slope of the Aconquija Ranges (FOA, acronym for Faldeo Oriental del Aconquija) and Southwest Ranges of Tucumán (SS). Through a comparative analysis,using geographic information systems and hydrological model HEC-Geo HMS ® base on the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER GDEM) digital elevation model. The results suggest that the FOA and SS watersheds are the most elongated and classified as medium-sized basins. Comparatively the Balderrama and Romano Basins have major erosion potential than the Gastona and Río Chico Basins. In the same way, in the SS Basins, Chavarría and Singuil Basins have major torrential characteristics (concentration times less than 7 hours) than Marapa and Matazambi Basins (concentration greater than 10 hours). The maps and the new data (tables) obtained have a direct application in the proposals of watershed management plans.Las cuencas hidrológicas localizadas en las laderas orientales de las sierras en el Noroeste Argentino se caracterizan por presentar un marcado quiebre en la transición ladera piedemonte, precipitaciones de origen orográfico, registros de eventos de inundación y escasos registros hidrométricos. Los parámetros morfométricos permiten definir la interacción entre las características geológicas y geomorfológicas, y los patrones físicos superficiales, caracterizando de manera cuantitativa la posible respuesta de la cuenca ante un escenario hidrológico. El objetivo de este trabajo fue cuantificar de manera objetiva las características morfométricas de las cuencas hidrográficas del Faldeo Oriental de las Sierras del Aconquija (FOA) y Sierras del Sudoeste (SS). Se realizó por medio de un análisis comparativo, a nivel geoespacial con Sistemas de Información Geográfica, aplicando el modelo hidrológico HEC-Geo HMS ®, basado en el modelo de elevación digital de Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER). Los resultados indican que las cuencas FOA y SS se clasifican en cuencas medianas y la mayoría de forma alargada. Comparativamente, las cuencas Balderrama y Romano tienen mayor potencial de erosión que las cuencas Gastona y Chico. De la misma manera, en las cuencas de las SS, Chavarría y Singuil tienen mayor torrencialidad (tiempos de concentración menor a 7 horas) que las cuencas de Marapa y Matazambi (tiempos de concentración mayor a 10 horas).
