Lorsqu’une étoile massive arrive à la fin de sa vie, elle devient une supernova. Après l’explosion, un choc fort commence à se propager avec les éjectas de l’étoile dans le milieu circumstellaire puis dans le milieu interstellaire (MIS). Cet objet est appelé un reste de supernova (RSN). Lors de son expansion, le RSN accumule de la matière derrière le front du chocet une coquille se forme. La théorie décrit trois phases d’expansion du RSN. La première phase correspond à la phase d’expansion balistique avec un rayon R du RSN proportionnel à son âge t.
