Les séquences répétées d’ADN sont organisées sous forme d'hétérochromatine et peuvent induire de la variégation par effet de position (PEV) dans le génome. PEV est l'expression mosaïque de gènes juxtaposés à l'hétérochromatine. PEV a été utilisé comme outil au fil des années pour le criblage des modificateurs de la chromatine. Les cribles génétiques ont été particulièrement utilisés pour leurs identifications dans des organismes modèles tels que la Drosophile et la souris.
