The spatial heritage of the warriors in Kanazawa city : architectural, urban and landscape history of a Japanese castle-town (17th - 21st centuries)

Cette thèse porte sur le patrimoine architectural, urbain et paysager de la classe des guerriers de l’époque d’Edo dans l’ancienne ville-sous-château de Kanazawa. Elle se situe à la croisée de plusieurs disciplines que sont l’histoire de l’architecture, l’analyse spatiale, l’histoire du Japon et l’histoire du patrimoine. À travers un plan chronologique en trois parties, nous traversons les trois époques historiques japonaises prémoderne, moderne et contemporaine (du XVIIe au XXIe siècle) afin d’identifier le rôle de l’habitat guerrier (seigneurs et vassaux) dans la formation et le développement de la ville. Notre travail révèle d’une part que l’héritage spatial des guerriers ne se limite pas au patrimoine bâti, mais relève aussi d’un processus de transmission des formes urbaines, et permet d’autre part d’évaluer sa place dans les politiques urbaines actuelles. Cette thèse illustre ainsi la diversité conceptuelle du patrimoine au Japon ainsi que ses multiples enjeux dans la ville contemporaine.This thesis focuses on the architectural, urban and landscape heritage of the Edo era warrior class in the old castle-town of Kanazawa. It is at the crossroads of several disciplines such as architectural history, spatial analysis, Japanese history and heritage history. Through a three-part chronological plan, we cross the three pre-modern, modern and contemporary Japanese historical periods (from the 17th to the 21st century) in order to identify the role of warrior habitat (lords and retainers) in the city's formation and development. Our work reveals on the one hand that the spatial heritage of warriors is not limited to the built heritage but is also a process of transmission of urban forms, and on the other hand allows us to evaluate its place in current urban policies. This thesis thus illustrates the conceptual diversity of heritage in Japan as well as its multiple challenges in the contemporary city
