La chute de Nicolae Ceauşescu en 1989 conduit à de fortes mobilisations intellectuelles pour la condamnation du régime communiste de Roumanie dans un contexte politique où l’exercice du pouvoir est assuré dès 1990 par une formation composée d’anciens membres de la nomenklatura. Marginalisé dans un premier temps, ces demandes de condamnation aboutissent au milieu des années 2000 à l’officialisation d’un discours de criminalisation du passé par le chef de l’État fortement appuyé dans sa démarche par une minorité d’historiens. Elle suit de près à la déclaration de reconnaissance par la Roumanie de sa participation à l’Holocauste durant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale.
