Dinoflagelati su jednostanični eukariotski, većinom planktonski organizmi koji pripadaju carstvu protista. Široko su rasprostranjeni u svim vodenim okolišima, te pojedine vrste u određenim uvjetima mogu lučiti toksine koji utječu na cijeli vodeni okoliš i time posljedično na ekonomiju i zdravlje ljudi. U nepovoljnim uvjetima pojedine vrste stvaraju ciste, rezistentan stadij, koji im omogućava preživljavanje.
