Conceptual metaphor: source of literary creativity

L’objet de ce mémoire est la métaphore conceptuelle, une théorie lancée par le cognitiviste George Lakoff et le philosophe Mark Johnson. Selon cette théorie, la métaphore joue un rôle crucial dans l'organisation de nos connaissances et façonne le monde qui nous entoure. Elle est donc un élément indispensable de la communication quotidienne. Bien que la métaphore ait longtemps été considérée la partie du langage poétique, les auteurs du livre Metaphors We Live By (1980) soutiennent que la source de toutes les métaphores est le langage quotidien, qui fonctionne selon un ensemble de métaphores conceptuelles établies qui dictent notre utilisation du langage. De plus, Lakoff et Turner explorent les métaphores dans la littérature pour prouver que les métaphores littéraires se servent également des métaphores conceptuelles en nommant les quatre processus utilisés par les poètes. Le but de ce mémoire était de passer en revue la fonctionnalité de cette théorie dans la langue française et de trouver des exemples de la littérature française qui soutiennent les affirmations présentées dans le livre More Than Cool Reason (1898).Tema ovog diplomskog rada je konceptualna metafora, teorija čiji su začetnici kognitivist George Lakoff i filozof Mark Johnson. Iako je metafora dugo bila viđena kao dio pjesničkog jezika, autori knjige Metaphors We Live By (1980) tvrde da je izvorište svih metafora u svakodnevnom jeziku koji funkcionira po setu uvriježenih konceptualnih metafora koje diktiraju naše korištenje jezika. Nadalje, Lakoff i Turner istražuju metafore u književnosti kako bi dokazali da se književne metafore također koriste konceptualnim metaforama imenujući četiri procesa kojim se pjesnici služe. Cilj ovog rada je bio preispitati funkcionalnost ove teorije na primjeru francuskog jezika, te pronaći prijmjere iz francuske književnosti koji potkrepljuju tvrdnje iznesene u knjizi More Than Cool Reason (1898).The subject of this dissertation is the conceptual metaphor, a theory introduced by the cognitivist George Lakoff and the philosopher Mark Johnson. According to this theory, metaphor plays a crucial role in the organization of our knowledge and shapes the world around us. It is, therefore, an essential element of our daily communication. Although metaphor has long been considered as a part of poetic language, the authors of the book Metaphors We Live By (1980) argue that the source of all metaphors is in everyday language, which then functions according to a set of well-established conceptual metaphors that dictate our use of language. In addition, Lakoff and Turner explore metaphors in literature to prove that literary metaphors also use the conceptual metaphors by naming the four processes used by poets. The purpose of this dissertation was to review the functionality of this theory in French language and find examples in French literature that support the claims made in the book More Than Cool Reason (1898)
