In isolated arteries from atherosclerotic and hypercholesterolaemic animals endothelium-dependent responses are attenuated. This dysfunction may result from the accumulation of oxidised low-density lipoproteins (OXLDL) within the vessel wall, a process known to contribute to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.
