The immune system confers protection by maintaining naive and memory T cell pools capable of responding to both new and recurrent infections respectively. However, these pools of lymphocytes are under constraints that may limit their persistence in vivo. Apoptosis and replicative senescence are known to control T cell numbers, and their regulation is of critical importance to the maintenance of lymphocyte pools. In this work it was found that naive CD45RA+ T cells can be induced to proliferate and survive in vitro by IL-7, while maintaining a naive phenotype, suggesting that this could be a mechanism that maintains the naive T cell pool during ageing. However, cytokine-induced proliferation was associated with telomere shortening in vitro. ...
