LISA is a five-year program of collaborative research on the role of spring lupins in UK agriculture. It forms a comprehensive evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of this crop within organic and conventional agriculture for arable and mixed livestock/arable systems. On farm nutrient budgets, crop competitiveness and weed control, feed utilization for ruminant and non-ruminants, and emissions from animal wastes are being assessed in comparison with other grain legumes. The potential of lupins to increase the efficiency of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) use is emphasized. Molecular markers for key traits will be identified and brought together with improved germplasm as a 'breeder's toolkit' for further lupin improvement. The need...
