Radiographic analysis of the main mistakes and accidents made by graduate students during the root canal obturation

The aim of this study was to investigate the main mistakes and accidents made during the root canal obturation, performed by undergraduate students from UNISUL, through pre and operative digital periapical radiographs. Also, the presence of a definitive restoration, after the end of the endodontic treatment, was verified. To do that, the dental records from the second semester of 2017 and the first and second semester of 2018 and 2019 of patients who received at least one endodontic treatment, performed by the undergraduation students, were investigated. The following criteria were observed in the radiographs: overfill, underfill, poor obturation 11 (condensation) and coronary obturation limit cut, and the presence of a definitive restoration with composite resin or intrarradicular pin and crown. It was possible to observe that 44.4% of obturations presented themselves with flaws, 7.1% of root canal were underfilled and 3.4% were overfilled. In regard to the coronal cut, 44% presented themselves with insufficient coronal cut and 4.9% were presented excessive coronal cut. Regarding restorations, 71.3% were sealed with provisional material. Therefore, it can be concluded that the most common mistakes and accidents during obturation were in sequence: insufficient coronal cut, underfilling, excessive coronal cut and overfilling. Still, most of the analyzed teeth did not present definitive restoration.O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar os principais erros e acidentes cometidos durante a obturação do sistema de canais radiculares, realizado por acadêmicos de Odontologia da Universidade do Sul de Santa Catarina (UNISUL), através de radiografias periapicais digitais pré e transoperatórias. Ainda, verificar a presença de uma restauração definitiva após o término do tratamento endodôntico. Para isso, os prontuários do segundo semestre do ano de 2017 e primeiro e segundo semestre dos anos de 2018 e 2019 de pacientes que receberam pelo menos um tratamento endodôntico, realizado por alunos de graduação, foram investigados. Os seguintes critérios foram analisados nas radiografias: sobreobturação, subobturação, obturação deficiente e falha no corte coronal da obturação, e a presença de uma restauração definitiva em resina composta ou pino intrarradicular e coroa. Foi possível observar que 44,4% das obturações apresentavam-se deficientes, 7,1% dos canais foram subobturados e 3,4% foram sobreobturados. Com relação ao corte coronal, 44% apresentavam-se com corte coronal insuficiente e 4,9% apresentavam-se com corte coronal excessivo. Em relação as restaurações 71,3% estavam selados com material provisório. Portanto, pode-se concluir que os erros e acidentes mais cometidos durante a obturação foram em sequência, corte coronal insuficiente, subobturação, corte coronal excessivo e sobreobturação.
