Epidemiology of dispensation of atypical antipsychotics for patients with Bipolar Affective Disorder, Schizoaffective Disorder and Schizophrenia in a south Brazilian state

ABSTRACT Introduction: Bipolar Affective Disorder, Schizoaffective Disorder and Schizophrenia are the main recommendation for atypical antipsychotics in Brazil, and to trace the epidemiology of distribution of these drugs is very important for a better management of this sector’s resources, yet contributing to a wider view of psychiatric disorders, granting that protocols and guidelines for treatment are being effectively utilized. Objective: Describe the epidemiology of dispensation of atypical antipsychotics for patients with Bipolar Affective Disorder, Schizoaffective Disorder and Schizophrenia in a south Brazilian state. Methodology: Cross-section descriptive study that analyses the population of patients who utilize the Medical Formulary for Request for Medications of the Special Component of Pharmacological Assistance for treatment ofa Bipolar Affective Disorder, Schizoaffective Disorder and Schizophrenia from 2012 to 2019. Results: An n=19.186 patients; of these, 80,9% are diagnosed with Schizophrenia, 16,8% with Bipolar Affective Disorder and 2,3% with Schizoaffective Disorder. 54% of the patients are male. The most dispensed medication for Schizophrenia, Bipolar Affective Disorder and Schizoaffective Disorder were, respectively: Olanzapine (58,44%), Quetiapine (61,61%) and Quetiapine (47,26%). Conclusion: There was dispensation within the expectations when compared to other countries. Although, Clozapine was below of what’s suitable for Schizophrenia. Other similar studies are still necessary.Introdução: Transtorno Afetivo Bipolar, Transtorno Esquizoafetivo e Esquizofrenia são as principais indicações do uso de antipsicóticos de segunda geração no País, e traçar o perfil demográfico da distribuição desses medicamentos é importante para o manejo de recursos nesse setor, além de contribuir com uma visão mais ampla dos transtornos psiquiátricos e o emprego dos protocolos e as diretrizes de tratamento. Objetivo: Descrever o perfil demográfico da distribuição dos antipsicóticos de segunda geração em Santa Catarina. Metodologia: Estudo descritivo transversal que analisa a população de pacientes que utilizam os Formulários Médicos Para Solicitação de Medicamentos através do Componente Especializado da Assistência Farmacêutica para o tratamento de Transtorno Afetivo Bipolar, Transtorno Esquizoafetivo e Esquizofrenia no período de 2012 a 2019 em Santa Catarina. Resultados: Obteve-se um n=19.186 pacientes; destes, 80,9% com diagnóstico de Esquizofrenia, 16,8% com diagnóstico de Transtorno Afetivo Bipolar e 2,3% com diagnóstico de Transtorno Esquizoafetivo. Mais da metade (50,53%) dos pacientes são do sexo masculino. Os medicamentos mais dispensados e suas frequências relativas para esquizofrenia, Transtorno Afetivo Bipolar e Transtorno Esquizoafetivo foram, respectivamente: Olanzapina (58,44%), Quetiapina (61,61%) e Quetiapina (47,26%). Conclusão: Houve dispensação dentro do esperado quando comparado com outros países. Apesar disso, a Clozapina ficou abaixo do que deveria ser adequado para Esquizofrenia.
