National audienceThis paper focuses on the rising political involvement of the young people in Ouessè, Benin. Since the turning point of the 1974 local elections stemming from Kérékou’s land and administration reforms, “youth” emerged progressively in local politics, both as a cognitive category and a strategic group. Some hardening of the cross-generations relationship occurred at the time. From the 1980’s onward, more complexity was added to the interplay as migrants from other regions in Benin gained access to land and to social integration through a “tutorship” system of cronyism.
