National audienceFour methods of appraising saprophytic competitive ability of 20 clones of Trichoderma were critically compared : determination of carboxymethyl cellulase activity (1), colonization of straw fragments buried in soil (2), agar disk method (3), viz. substrate colonization from gelled disks of inoculated soil, filter paper trap method (4). The 20 clones were classified according to the data obtained by each of these methods : methods 2, 3 and 4 gave classifications in good agreement (correlation coefficient r = 0.84 for 2-3 and r = 0.73 for 3-4), and allowed a very clear distinction between highly competitive and poorly competitive strains in the conditions of these trials.
