National audienceThe fluorescent-antibody technique was used to study persistence and competition of Rhizobium japonicum strains in soils at different temperatures and to examine the effect of plants on this bacterium in thee rhizosphere and rhizoplane. The soil population of R. japonicum strains G2 and G3 remained the same (104 bacteria/g of soil) throughout the experiment, without any significant competition between the two strains. In the rhizosphere experiment, only the host legume (Glycine max, cv. « Chippewa » ) supported highh populations of strain G3. In another experiment with four cultivars of soybeans, the populations of R.japonicum 102,103 more numerous in the rhizoplane soil than in normal soil. We suggest that the multiplicati...
