International audienceThe siderophore produced by Erwinia amylovora, the causal agent of fire blight of Maloideae, is one of the virulence factors of this bacterium. The production of siderophores enables E. amylovora to overcome the conditions of iron limitation met in plant tissue, and may also protect the bacteria against active oxygen species produced through the Fenton reaction. In this paper, we have examined the ability of an iron chelator protein, encoded by the bovine lactoferrin gene, to reduce fire blight susceptibility in pear (Pyrus communis L.).
