National audienceOne-node cuttings have been used to make a detailed description of bud dormancy in two walnut cultivars, « Pedro » and « Franquette » during autumn and winter. Our study showed that, for both cultivars, deepness of dormancy was very different between buds in a given crown. In addition to the well known existence of dormancy gradients along the shoot, the presence or absence of fruits at the apex of the shoots, and above all shoot elongation rhythms during summer could explain this variability : shoots with a longer elongation period during the previous summer bore less dormant axillary buds than short shoots.
