D, 2nd Battle Group, 180th Infantry. The guardsmen commanded by Capt. Marvin Oldham, also guarded all approached to Howe, turning back the sightseers who had begun to block the emergency vehicles. Officals spent hours checking losses, while rescue crews picked through wreckage to make sure no more survivors were trapped. Marion Wise, of Poteau, LeFlore County Red Cross chapter chairman, said the preliminary damage estimate at Howe is $275,000, with 50 house wrecked including about 20 in the immediate farming area. Only three or four houses were lost at Reichert. Wise said he has requested $175,000 in Red Cross disaster fund to help rebuild the homes. Lt. Col. LaVern Weber, 45th Division G-1 (administration) officer who surveyed the situation personally to asses the needs for men and supplies, said the tornado's eight-mile path could be seen clearly for the air. The swath of destruction, about three-quarters of a mile wide, was outlined by fallen, splintered trees. Weber, who has witnessed Oklahoma tornado scenes for many years, said he had never before seen such concentrated havoc...A squad of 12 nurses arrived Saturday from Muskogee to help care for the wounded in Poteau's hospital. the hospital's new, unfurnished wing was opened early Saturday, to accommodate overflow cots and beds.
