Caption: "The body of a convicted burglar was found in the charred rubble of the A&E Supply Co., 711 SW 4, early Saturday morning after the building was swept by two-alarm fire causing an estimated $40,000 damage. Police said it appeared the victim, Billy Ray Payne, 21, accidently set the fire in his attempt to burglarize the building, only to be trapped inside. Officers said Payne suffered burns on his hands and face, then apperently panicked and ran into a restroom to escape out a window. Ironically, the restroom windows had been filled with concrete. payne apparently died of saphyxiation while firemen fought to control the blaze. The victim's hands indicated he had tried frantically to claw his way out before he was finally overcome by smoke. firemen discovered the body in the smoke-filled restroom about 12:30 a.m. after the fire had been brought under control...District Fire Chief W. C. Roach said evidence indicated the blaze started from a flash fire. The building's electric clocks were stopped at 10:21 p.m. and we got the call at 10:22," he said. Roach said flames were shooting 20 to 30 feet into the air froma skylight above the building......Three firemen were overcome by smoke during the 4 1/2 hour battle to extinguish the flames. None was serioursly injured, however. Three Injured Fireman Eldon Tinsley remained in Mercy Hospital overnight for observation. Bobby Summers and Jack Duggan were released after treatment and returned to duty. Another fireman, Leonard O'Daniel, 27, of 1340 Lafayette Dr., suffered a severely cut hand while attempting to push a hose through a window. Payne recently served a two-year buglary sentence at Granite Reformatory and police say he has a lengthy record here. A two-alarm fire gutted this building and killed a convicted burglar early Saturday morning.
