Caption: "Mammoth Eufuala Dam, under construction since 1956, will impound a reservoir, entirely within the state, that will overshadow even Lake Texoma which Oklahoma shares with Texas. Construction of Eufaula dam is near midway point. Water is to be available for power in 1964 and the lake is to be filled by 1965. Six eastern Oklahoma counties will share a direct benefit from the huge, new reservoir. it will extend into each of them. But the new lake, which will have a surface area 7,000 acres greater than Lake Texoma, presently the state's largest, will be a big recreational attraction for the entire state. Heavy western Oklahoma traffic is expected to be able to zoom to the Eufaula areaon high-speed, four lane I.H. 40 eventually. The first part of the 70-mile per hour freeway already is started. The reservoir will be principally in McIntosh, Haskell, Pittsburg and Okmilgee counties, but smaller areas will touch Muskogee and Latimer counties. Surface of its power pool will cover 102,5000 acres, compared with only 95,400 acres for Lake Texoma......Initial construction on this project to dam the waters of the Canadian between two bluff approcimately 12 miles east of Eufaula began in 1956, under supervision of the U.S. Army Engineer District, Tulsa. Col. Howard W. Penny, is head of the Tulsa district. Webster Boland is resident engineer at the dam site. Charles W. Subrey is assistant resident engineer and J. L. Hassell is in charge of the district real estate office at Eufaula, responsinle for acquiring land......Construction of the reservoir was approved by congress under the River and Harbor Act of July 24, 1946. It has a three-fold purpose: Flood control along the Canadian, hydroelectric power, and long-range planning toward naivigable waterway from Catoosa, Okla., 15 miles east of Tulsa, to the Mississippi River......Economic benefits in the construction area are apparent, particulary in Eufaula. At least a third of the approximately 1,200 construction workmen currently employed on the dam and lake live in Eufaula.
