Caption: "Oklahoma City's new U.S. by-pass is beginning to like and ultra-modern highway, and the NW 49 and Classes area is the hub of construction activity. The four-lane paving on the north leg of the project already has been pushed to that point, and in the lower picture you can see the new Classen traffic circle. To the right of the circle will be one of the large bridges that will carry northbound traffic over the express highway. Also in the lower picture can be seen roadbed still under construction. plans call for the by-pass route to continue west to a junction with May at NW 49. And in the program is a curved link with NW 39 which will jut south from just east of Classen. All of the NE 63 and Eastern to NW 50 and May road is now under construction. The Lincoln-May road runs for 11.889 miles and is being built at a cost of $4,576, 200, not inculding right of way. Construction costs are being met by the state and federal government under the urban-highway program. Right of way is being provided by the city and county. The by-pass also extends from Eastern to Witcher which is the terminus of Turner turnpike. A similar U.S. 66 by-pass program is being prepared by Tulsa to link that city to the state's rapidly-developing 88-mile toll road. (photo tag: Here's how the new U.
