Volcanoes and outlaws, talents and misrule: visions of Italy in writings of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in China (1834-1839)

Considerando l’Italia come un caso di studio, questo articolo indaga il processo di trasmissione di conoscenze e informazioni sul mondo occidentale che operò in Cina tra gli anni Trenta e Cinquanta del XIX secolo. Prendendo in esame cinque pubblicazioni attribuite alla Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in China (SDUKC), che fu attiva a Canton fra il 1834 e il 1839, questo articolo dapprima ricostruisce l’immagine dell’Italia che esse forniscono ai lettori cinesi su quattro temi: il paesaggio, la storia, la contemporaneità, la popolazione. Esamina poi la ricezione di queste informazioni da parte cinese, effettuando un confronto tra i testi originali e la selezione e/o adattamento che di essi propose Wei Yuan (1794-1857) nello Haiguo tuzhi (Maps and Documents of the Maritime Countries: 1843, 1847, and 1852). Mette così in evidenza in che modo diversi “intermediari” – prima alcuni missionari protestanti e poi un influente letterato cinese – siano stati protagonisti attivi in questo processo di trasmissione transculturale, negoziando specifiche immagini dell’“Altro” in diversi momenti storici e con diversi obiettivi.Considering Italy as a case study, this article investigates the transmission of knowledge about the western world that took place in China from the 1830s to the early 1850s. By examining five publications attributed to the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in China (SDUKC), which operated in Canton between 1834 and 1839, this article first reconstructs the image of Italy they propose to the Chinese readers in four respects, namely its landscape, history, contemporaneity, and population. It then examines the reception of this information by the Chinese, proposing a comparison between the original texts and the selection and/or adaptation of the contents that Wei Yuan (1794-1857) made in his Haiguo tuzhi (Maps and Documents of the Maritime Countries: 1843, 1847, and 1852). It thus highlights the active role that different "intermediaries" - first some Protestant missionaries and then an influential Chinese scholar – played in this process of transcultural transmission by negotiating specific images of the "Other" in different historical moments and with different objectives
