This thesis focuses on a literary depiction of the Victorian era in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. The theoretical part explores the importance of selected aspects of spirituality, the competition between Christian denominations, and subsequently emphasises the conflict between religion and scientific discoveries that challenged popularly held beliefs. In connection to the novella, a motif of duality that underlies Christian faith is analysed via works of renowned philosophers. The analytical part consists of linking tendencies related to spirituality typical for the era to the novella.
