This chapter presents the main characteristics of the European nuclear waste governance system. It is organised into two main sections. The first is devoted to technical considerations about how radioactive waste have historically been dealt with in the EU. The second focuses on the different regulatory initiatives that have taken place since the inception of a European nuclear governance with the foundation of the Euratom. A concluding section presents some current challenges for NWM governance in the EU
