The Implementation of Film to Improve Students’ Ability in Writing Narrative Text

The objective of this research is to test the effectiveness of film to improve the students’ ability in writing narrative text. The type of this research is a quasi-experimental research design that involved two groups experimental group and control group. The samples were selected through cluster random sampling technique; they were X IPS 1, consisted of 27 students, and X IPS 2, consisted of 26 students.The data of this research were collected through the pretest and posttest in order to analyze the students’ ability in writing before and after the treatment. The obtained data were statistically analyzed to find out the significant difference between two groups on the posttest. The result of the data analysis indicated that the students’ ability in writing narrative text was improved. It could be seen through the result of the mean score of the experimental group improved from 35.64 to 68.05 on the posttest. In contrast, the mean score of the control group has no significant improvement; in which the mean score of the group only improves from 35.33 to 37.50. Moreover, relying on the ttable value of df 51 (27+26-2) by applying 0.05 level of significance, the researcher found that the tcounted value (12.705) is much higher than the ttable value (1.663); it means that the hypothesis is accepted. To conclude, the implementation of film is effective to improve the students’ ability in writing narrative text of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Sindue. Keywords: Implementation, Film, Writing, Narrative Text AbstrakTujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menguji keefektifan dari film untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis teks naratif siswa. Peneliti menerapkan desain penelitian kuasi eksperimen. Teknik pengambilan sampel purposif digunakan untuk memilih sampel; di mana X IPS 1, terdiri dari 27 siswa, dan X IPS 2, terdiri dari 26 siswa, dipilih sebagai kelompok eksperimen dan kontrol. Data penelitian ini kemudian dikumpulkan melalui prates dan pascates untuk menganalisa kemampuan menulis siswa sebelum dan sesudah perlakuan. Data yang terkumpul dianalisa secara statistik untuk menemukan perbedaan yang signifikan antara dua kelompok pada pascates. Hasil dari analisis data menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan menulis teks naratif oleh siswa meningkat. Hal ini ditunjukkan dengan perolehan nilai rata-rata kelompok eksperimen meningkat dari 35.64 ke 68.05 pada pascates. Sebaliknya, nilai rata-rata dari kelompok kontrol tidak mengalami peningkatan signifikan; di mana nilai rata-rata kelompok ini hanya meningkat dari 35.33 ke 37.50. Merujuk pada nilai ttabel dari df 51 (27+26-2) dengan mengaplikasikan 0.05 tingkat signifikan, peneliti menemukan bahwa nilai thitung (12.705) lebih tinggi dari nilai t­­tabel (1.663) yang menunjukkan diterimanya hipotesa penelitian. Dengan kata lain, penerapan dari film efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis teks naratif pada siswa kelas sepuluh SMA Negeri 1 Sindue.
