This study was conducted to determine the degree to which instruction in teachers’ manuals related to the stories students would read in their basal readers. Five instructional units from grades one through six in each of seven basals were randomly selected for analysis from the table of contents. Three raters were trained to conduct the analysis. Data indicated that the instruction in teachers’ manuals related to children\u27s stories less than 33% of the time. Findings were interpreted with respect to Mason\u27s (1983) findings that teachers related their instruction to the text about 24% of the time. Implications for teachers, text adoption committees and publishers were discussed
