The realization of the importance of planting to the successful achievement of the objectives of many conservation programs has led to increased emphasis on the development of suitable planting methods and the low-cost production of stock. Vegetative propagation offers a means by which these problems can be solved, at least in part. Another use of vegetative propagation is as a forest tool for the immediate use of excellent hybrids and selected superior individuals or strains found in the natural forest that must be multiplied as clones to maintain their inherent characteristics.
