The views of primary school mathematics teachers over alternative methods of measurement and evaluation

WOS: 000304504800016The aim of this study is to determine what the teachers' views on the alternative measurement and assessment methods in the new mathematics program, which has been applied at Level II since the academic year of 2006-2007 as well as the issues encountered during the application. In the study was used the special-case research method. The data of the research were obtained from twenty (20) teachers through the interview method. The population of the study includes the public elementary-schools in the province of Giresun and in the neighboring towns in Fall-Semester in the academic year of 2010 and 2011. Twenty (20) mathematics teachers who are employed at the primary schools above make up the sample of the study. The results obtained indicated that: (1) Teachers have the general but not detailed knowledge of the alternative measurement and assessment. (2) A number of issues were encountered during the application-phase because of the fact that the classrooms were crowded, the teachers had busy, tiring and expensive time-tables, and the students lacked interest in the courses
