During the last years computerized feeding systems have become an essential component of active stables. The 24 hour individual feeding of horses based on frequent, but limited access to roughage and grain stations has effects on salivary cortisol and laterality. A high level of cortisol and a strong laterality can lower the horses` welfare. The horses in this study show a higher baseline in cortisol that may have been influenced by the system, that provides feeding during the whole day, but restricted in small time budgets or amounts for an animal with naturally long terms of feed intake.
