Promising South American Oil Palm Acrocomia totai Mart.:Current Status and Future Prospects

The mbocayá palm (Acrocomia totai Mart.) is a traditionally used oil-producing palm from South America. The palm's fruits and their pulp and kernel oil constitute an important component of the diet of the native people. Fruits collected from wild palms have been processed for soap manufacturing in Paraguay since the beginning of the 20th century. Other parts of the plant are used for various purposes, from feeding animals to medicinal applications. In addition to the use of the oils in human nutrition and in the chemical and cosmetic industries, biodiesel can be produced from mbocayá palm oils. Furthermore, the expeller is a valuable component in feedingrations. Fruit husk (exocarp) and shell (endocarp) are used to produce energy. Although knowledge about cultivation is still sparse, the palm presents a potentially high-yielding crop species for commercial exploitation.Die Mbocayá Palme (Acrocomia totai Mart.) ist eine traditionell verwendete Ölpalme aus Südamerika. Die Früchte und deren Pulpa- und Kernöl sind ein wichtiger Bestandteil der Ernährung der einheimischen Bevölkerung. Früchte wild wachsender Palmen wurden in Paraguay seit Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts zur Herstellung von Seife verwendet. Auch andere Pflanzenteile werden vielseitig verwendet, von der Tierfütterung bis zu medizinischen Anwendungen. Neben der Nutzung der Öle für die menschliche Ernährung, und für die Chemie und Kosmetik Industrie, gibt es die Möglichkeit, daraus Biodiesel herzustellen. Zudem ist der Presskuchen ein wertvoller Zusatz in Futterrationen. Die Fruchtschale (Exocarp) und die Samenschale (Endocarp) werden energetisch genutzt. Obgleich es Wissenslücken im Bereich des Anbaus gibt, ist die Palme eine potentielle ertragreiche Pflanze für den kommerziellen Anbau
