Burkholderia pseudomallei ist ein gram-negatives Stäbchenbakterium, das in tropischen und subtropischen Gebieten endemisch ist. Bedeutung erlangte das Bakterium als Modellorganismus für intrazelluläres Überleben. Als solches ist B. pseudomallei in der Lage in Wirtszellen einzudringen, sich aus dem Phagolysosom zu befreien, im Zytosol zu replizieren, Aktinschweife zu induzieren und sich von Zelle zu Zelle auszubreiten. B. pseudomallei ist der Verursacher der Melioidose, einer Erkrankung mit sehr unterschiedlichen klinischen Verläufen.
