Relationship between group size and area of ​​life in a group of spider monkeys-the-north (Brachyteles hypoxanthus)

Dados sobre a área de vida de um grupo de muriquis-do-norte (Brachyteles hypoxanthus) foram coletados na RPPN Feliciano Miguel Abdala, Caratinga, Minas Gerais, durante dois anos consecutivos (Setembro de 2008 a Julho de 2009) e (Agosto de 2009 a Julho de 2010), quando o grupo era composto por 102-109 indivíduos, e comparados com dados sobre a área de vida do mesmo grupo entre 1998/1999, quando o tamanho do grupo era aproximadamente 50% menor. Apesar do aumento do tamanho do grupo, nossos resultados mostraram que a área de vida durante o período do presente estudo (2008/2009= 304 ha; 2009/2010= 293 ha) foi similar aos 309 ha definidos por Dias e Strier (2003). A estabilidade no tamanho da área de vida pode ser a consequência da intensificação do uso do espaço físico e dos recursos nele presentes, como sugerido pela mediana de quadrículas visitadas mensalmente no nosso estudo, que foi menor que a metade relatada por Dias e Strier (2003). Este resultado a respeito do uso mais intensivo do habitat é consistente com a pequena área núcleo que nós registramos durante este estudo. No entanto, visto que a área de vida utilizada pelos animais pode ser influenciada por diversos fatores, sugerimos que é necessária a comparação de padrões de atividade e fenologia entre a mesma e entre diferentes populações para se entender completamente como a área de vida dos muriquis-do-norte pode variar ao longo do tempo.Data on the home range of a group of northern muriqui (Brachyteles hypoxanthus) were collected in the RPPN Feliciano Miguel Abdala, Caratinga, Minas Gerais, for two consecutive years (September 2008 to July 2009) and (August 2009 to July 2010), when the group was composed of 102-109 individuals, and compared with the home range of the same group between 1998/1999, when the group size was approximately 50% smaller. Despite the increase in the size of the group, our results showed that the group s home range during the present study period (2008/2009 = 304 ha; 2009/2010 = 293 ha) was similar to the 309 ha reported by Dias and Strier (2003) from 1998/1999. The stability in the home range size may be a consequence of the more intensified use of space and resources of the area, as implied by the median number of quadrats visited per month in our study, which was less than half that reported by Dias and Strier (2003). This finding of more intensive habitat use is consistent with the small core area we recorded during this study. However, because the home range used by animals can be influenced by several factors, we suggest that comparisons of activity patterns and plant phenology, between the same and different populations are necessary to fully understand how northern muriqui home ranges might change over time.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superio
