The use of the title „Apostolic King+ during the reign of Franz Joseph The Hungarian kings used the title “apostolic king” for almost a thousand years. This practice came about because the kings had founded all the dioceses and monasteries in Hungary and according to Hungarian legend it was the Pope himself who gave this title to our first king, Saint Stephen. Throughout history the kings used this title in order to vindicate the right to nominate the bishops in Hungary. The practice became problematic in the 19th century with the birth of the modern civil state, when secular government ministries sought to nominate catholic bishops.
