Although many entities may cause hypercalcemia, the most common cause in a subject with few or no symptoms is primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). The PHPT is characterized by excessive secretion of parathyroid hormone, usually by a single parathyroid adenoma. Although most patients with PHPT are asymptomatic, in some cases, decrease in bone mineral density may be revealed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.
