This condition has multiple complications both micro and macrovascular that cause several kinds of multiorganic lesions. However, there are still many complications that need further research, hearing loss being one of them. Various studies showed a correlation between hearing loss and this metabolic condition concluding that DM is responsible for a bilateral, progressive, sensorineural hypoacusis affecting mainly high frequencies.
