Tese de mestrado, Anatomia artistica, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Belas Artes, 2012The Master’s degree in Artistic Anatomy was a path (way) I decided to follow with the aim of achieving a better understanding of the human body in all its aspects. The will to draw together with, the pleasure and the sense of self compensation I derive from this act also played a part in my choosing to enroll in this Academic course offered by the Faculdade de Belas Artes de Lisboa. I believe drawing is the simpler and most effective language for expression and communication that we can use. Many times, in different parts of the world and in situations where the spoken language had proved useless to convey the meaning that I intended, I was able to make a statement or to ask for something that I wanted by means of making a simple sketch. Academically, we prefer the word to other forms of expression. We then make an effort to make use of the word in such a way order that all doubts, mistakes and ambiguities are avoided in our communication. On the other hand, when we try to use the word for speaking about Art, (even in the cases where the word itself is the essence of the Art, like in poetry), we easily fall into paradox, ontradiction and doubt. As I engaged in the process of drawing the human figure together with an academically oriented group, it became for me a ritual of meditation and contemplation. An experience that led me to the conclusion that it is an act of fundamental interest for all those who aspire to development in the fields of Art or human science, independently of the end results that may be achieved, either from the scientific or the aesthetic points of view. In fact, I believe the best way to observe the world in order to understand it is through drawing, for it is the most effective language the human being has developed in the course of history. The present work consists in a search for coincidences between forms in nature and their relationships to rational logics and Mathematics, as found in the drawing of the human figure. Art and science are disciplines that follow different paths. While the first is on the look for questions and hypothesis, and the second is a quest for answers and reliable results, both are tools that humanity uses with a common purpose: development. Philosophy links Myth and Logos. It is based in rational arguments, analysis of concepts and lateral thinking. This triangle - Science, Philosophy and Art, forms the basis of all civilizations, all cultures, and all World visions. The search and recognition of patterns was always the key to human development.
