The mathematical method we formerly used for decomposing the solar spectrum into Gaussian components is now generalized so as to include Voigt profiles. This method is applied to a theoretical blend of Voigt profiles. Gaussian approximations are also examined in some detail. Only the knowledge of the observed wings of a line to a sufficiently great extent can lead to reliable values for the parameters of a Voigt profile.Steyaert Herman, Dingens Paul, Baeck Nicole.
